It's Lice Season!

Each year on the ending of Winter and the beginning of Spring the creepy crawlies come out to play.

One of which is commonly lice. Yes lice as in what sent most kids to the nurses office in school. Luckily these lice won't affect humans but will use us to get from animal to animal.

These can wreak havoc on your horse and other horses around them as it is contagious to other equines.

How To Prevent Lice?

Simple really. Here are 3 steps to help prevent lice.

  1. Monitor your horse's coat and skin. Especially if your horse has a thick coat, mane or tail.

  2. Use separate brushes and tack. Picking up lice in fibers of material and using it on another horse is one of the easiest ways to spread lice.

  3. Use fly spray! Yes fly spray is not just for flies. Some fly sprays contain ingredients that either kill or repell lice.

How To Treat It?

Our bathing service can provide a medical bath. This bath uses a shampoo that contains permethryn . Using this method ensures the whole horse is able to be treated all the way down to the skin.

After this we recommended scheduling a body clip to make the horse less appealing to invading lice.

Make sure to also quarantine horses during treatment to prevent spreading and don't forget to disinfect equipment.

Ask the vet

Don't forget to always consult with your vet before seeking treatment. Many times dander is confused for lice and lice for dander. Your vet will be able to confirm your equine's symptoms in fact determine your equines condition.
